Willie Nelson Calls Trump Border Policy Outrageous
Country legend Willie Nelson has spoken out against the Department of Justice’s new border policy. "What's going on at our southern border is outrageous. Christians everywhere should be up in arms,” he said in a statement first reported by Rolling Stone. “What happened to ‘Bring us your tired and weak and we will make them strong?’ This is still the promise land,” he added, quoting a David Lynn Jones song Wilson recorded on his 1986 album, The Promiseland.
Nelson has long been a supporter of social causes, including gay marriage and environmentalism. He’s also been a champion for immigrants long before Trump’s new no-tolerance policy. Speaking on the Mexico-Texas border in 2014, he told Rolling Stone, “I've been watching, and the only thing we can do is take care of those kids, whatever it takes. They're scared. They're being mistreated. And it's not a good way to start off your life.” In 2010, Nelson joined Santana and Mexican pop-rock band Mana to record “Si Se Puede,” a song protesting Arizona’s controversial immigration law, SB 1070.
