Lucy Boynton in Erdem at the SAGs: one of the worst dressed or kind of cool?
Lucy Boynton of Bohemian Rhapsody looked straight out of the 90s in a bizarre Erdem floral dress with a sheer polka dot overlay featuring puff sleeves and a high collar. My prom dress had a polka dot overlay and sleeves that looked just like this. Her hair seems like an afterthought but this is how we would wear it in the 90s – half up with a dippy velvet bow at the back. She also had weird liquid eyeliner in thin unfinished outlines. Someone was going for fancy goth throwback. I think the ruffle at the bottom puts it over the top.
Laura Harrier of BlacKkKlansman was in a pink Loewe gown featuring very low half puff sleeves. I thought this was unique and so pretty on camera. In photos you can see the weird hemline though, which I don’t like. She was asked in her People Live interview if she kept any of her character’s awesome 70s clothing or accessories. She said she didn’t as she was afraid Spike Lee would disapprove, but she wished she had. There was such great styling in that movie.
I love to see what Madeline Brewer is wearing and I think she’s so pretty with red hair, but this see through lace red and black Brock Collection gown is a definite miss. I thought these “bathing suit under sheer gown” looks went out several years ago.
Madeline’s Handmaid’s Tale costar Samira Wiley was in a black matte and sequin Georges Chakra gown. I like these traditional-looking gowns with one contemporary feature like this asymmetric piecey top. This is well balanced. Samira usually makes very good fashion choices.
Rhea Seehorn’s George Chakra dress was similarly unique but not weird at all. She was in a black gown featuring folded layers of bright fabric on the bodice. I’m going to keep an eye out for Georges Chakra gowns at the Oscars as I’m a fan. As for her show I watched the first season of Better Call Saul but I stopped a couple of episodes into the second season. I need to give it another chance because it’s a slow burn.
The back is really cool too!
Sophia Bush was a little matronly in a strapless polka dot Monique Lhuillier gown with a tulle cape. Maybe this wouldn’t look so old fashioned if her styling was different. Like Lucy Boynton, her hair was part of the look and they took it too far. She’s one of my favorite celebrities to follow on Instagram. I appreciate how outspoken and matter-of-fact she is.
